Warlord Sun King

AGCC HAS BEEN CANCELLED! WE WILL BE BACK WITH A NEW VENUE AND KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN. See updates.

Eco- concerned with living things in relation to their environment.
Baroque- extravagantly ornate, florid, and convoluted in character.
We have been invited to show a site-specific version of our Eco-Baroque installation ‘Warlord Sun King’ at Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro, CA. It opens to the public in May 2011 (opening date TBD) in conjunction with ACGC’s Open Studios 2011, their flagship annual event. The venue is providing $3,000 towards our installation, but we have to raise the rest of the funds! We will be packing and driving the work in a box truck to LA ourselves and are looking for support for transportation, lodging and some of the materials needed for building the installation. Please support our endeavor, as this is the first opportunity for our ‘eco-baroque’ project to be shown outside of Portland, Oregon and our first opportunity to exhibit in the greater L.A. area; providing us with much needed exposure!

‘Warlord Sun King’ is an elaborate installation of several thematically linked elements, featuring a large, floating ‘tanning-bed chandelier’ as the centerpiece. It has strange crystals and minerals hang down and on top sits a large mound of recycled debris, with trees growing out of it. This humorous hybrid of ‘nature-meets-Louis XIV decadence’ is a maximalist aesthetic style with an aim to inform/amuse while questioning mankind’s consumption of energy, resources and humanity’s ever-changing relationship to the environment. ‘Eco-Baroque’ is based on natural forms, in which magnificent opulence is created using ornate decorative materials (natural materials when possible) drawing analogies between complex beauty as found in nature, and the luxury goods with which we humans surround ourselves in order to try and create distance between us and the animals.
